Let’s explore together the scenery of South Korea's Sunrise Peak, Seongsan Ilchulbong.
Why Seongsan Ilchulbong is the most famous Landmark of Jeju ?
Seongsan Ilchulbong is undoubtedly one of the most well recognized destinations in Jeju Island and moreover, it is UNESCO World Heritage site. But why it is so famous ?
Seongsan Ilchulbong is a marvelous result of Nature, that was formed after volcanic eruption 100,000 years ago. Tuff Cone, which is bowl shaped crater was formed around 5,000 years ago. Because of its unique natural environment and scenery Seongsang Ilchulbong was designated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
Why is it known as a Sunrise Peak and how do I get there?
Since Seongsang Ilchulbong is located on Eastern side of the Island you can see the earliest and most beautiful Sunrises from here. In fact, islanders and visitors come here every year on December 31 to meet the first Sunrise of the year. In the early morning everyone who wants has their first swim in cold waters of the sea.
How do we get to the Sunrise Peak? If you travel from Jeju city, then you can get on the bus number 112 that leaves both from Jeju Int. Airport and Jeju City Bus terminal. Meanwhile, for those who travel from Segwipo city it is recommended to take bus 101. One way journey by bus from Jeju city or Segwipo city takes around one hour. On the way make sure you have a window sit, because there are a lot of views to enjoy on the way.
The entrance fee is free for Jeju residents, otherwise it costs 5000 won per person(the prices rose recently, it used to be 2000 won per person only). The site opens before the dawn so whoever wants can enjoy the sunrise. It totally worth waking up early. However, if you are being it is still ok, because it's always beautiful here. But make sure you arrive before 16:30, because that is when visiting time ends. And when you start your climb remember to come back before closing time at 18:00.
The climb is very easy and smooth and takes from 20 to 35 minutes. On the way up visitors can enjoy lush vegetation, and beautiful cliffs. However, the most fascinating during the climbing is the view of the village you will see below. So if you love enjoying the panoramic views then the climb will require more time. Luckily there are places to sit down, relax and enjoy the view. On the way up we must always be careful and maintain the cleanliness of the environment. Also on the way up you will notice sacred rocks, they are marvelously shaped and you can observe them, but please avoid touching them.
After spending some time at the top in a bowl shaped crane it is time to go down. While descending you will have another chance to enjoy the scenery. On the descending side sea waves, cliffs and on a sunny day emerald waters make it a wonderful spot to take scenic pictures.
You can even see Udo Island while descending on the East side. Udo is another jewel to enjoy in Jeju but i will share the detailed information in another post about Udo Island.
There are many things to explore around Seongsan Ilchulbong area namely, travelling to Udo Island for a day or even a half day , visiting Haenyo Museum or wandering in Bijarim Forest. Furthermore, I strongly recommend you to stay in the area overnight.
