You're heard of dog cafes, cat cafes, bird cafes, and even a sheep cafe. But how about cows...
If you're a student in Sejong or Jochiwon, you know that the city has many beautiful and well-maintained bike paths, and a fantastic bicycle rental system. But did you know that on a bike path almost exactly halfway between Sejong and Jochiwon there's a very special cafe? Korea is famous for their animal cafes (sheep, cats, dogs, racoons...), and now we can add a cow cafe to the list!
Milk is a cafe operating on a long-running dairy farm, which serves drinks and ice cream made with fresh milk straight from the cows that live next door. The menu features classics like cafe lattes and cafe mochas, but you can also order a glass of fresh white milk, a dalgona latte, affogato or smoothie.
We ordered the cafe mocha and affogato for a total of 12,400 won. The prices are a bit high by Jochiwon standards, but nothing you wouldn't expect at a cafe in Sejong or Seoul. The cafe mocha was made with warm hot chocolate, a shot of expresso and cold, fresh milk poured on top. The affogato was made using the farm's special milk ice cream topped with two shots of expresso and a sprinkling of almond slices. Both were delicious, however we agreed that we definitely have to come back to try a bowl of green tea ice cream!
Now for the best part: at four o'clock the cows have their dinner, and cafe guests are welcome to watch the cows eating and snap photos. Please remember that these animals are not like the dogs and cats at pet cafes, and they will get nervous if you get too close. But if you give them space they're very happy to munch on their hay while you snap a thousand and one photos.
In the barn there are some baby and juvenile cows, who will stare at you curiously while you take photos and tell them how beautiful they are. The cafe has a sign saying they do not allow dogs, however the farmer has at least three that run around greeting and playing with guests, and it appears that guests are allowed to bring dogs so long as they don't come inside the cafe.
This cafe is only open on select days, as the farm's daily maintenance needs so much time and attention. You can visit between 10:00 and 21:00 Thursday to Sunday, as well as on holidays. If in doubt it's best to call ahead!
As the cafe is in a bit of a rural location, the easiest and cheapest way to get there is by bicycle, which takes about thirty minutes from Jochiwon Station. However the road is open to cars, so as the weather turns colder and cycling becomes less practical you could drive or take a taxi. The address and phone number are:
